“I just can’t lose weight,” lamented my friend after a week on Atkins. “I never want to look at another pat of butter or slab of bacon the rest of my life!”
She actually did lose 5 pounds on this low carb diet, but when overcome with an urge for fruit, she ate two apples, she regained the five pounds overnight. Atkins was only one of a plethora of diets that my friend had tried, such at Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, the cabbage soup diet and the South Beach diet. On each of these weight loss programs, she’d lose a few pounds and then, when a week would go by with no results, she’d give up.
“Too many restrictions, too much measuring, not enough weight loss!”
“Why don’t you try meal replacement shakes?” I suggested. They worked for me. My main goal was not weight loss. I was looking for a convenient alternative to the hours I was spending each day preparing well-balanced meals. Unwilling to give up on nutrition, I felt that this was the only way for me to stay healthy. On a dare, I began bringing two shakes to work each day, one for breakfast and one for lunch. Then I’d have a sensible dinner. I was delighted not to have to rush around in the morning, and I got to sleep an extra half an hour. What really surprised me was that, at the end of my first week drinking these shakes, the scale showed that I’d lost three pounds.
Meal replacement shakes come in a variety of flavors, but I prefer strawberry. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals, low in fat and sugar, full of fiber, easy to digest protein and healthy fats. Since I’ve been drinking these shakes I’ve never felt healthier, and now, so does my friend.
